Ability First is a not for profit, organisation formed to support those who have suffered a life changing illness or injury. We help our users to rebuild confidence in themselves by focusing on their abilities and potential so they can engage fully with their lives.
Most of us start our working lives with hopes and dreams as to what we will do and how we might live our lives. Imagine how devastating it would be for you and your family if you are told you have a long-term illness or disability. You have always enjoyed good health and have been able to rely on it to propel you forwards for a successful career and comfortable lifestyle. Then you get the diagnosis, and everything changes. You have no idea of how to make sense of what is happening to you, you don’t understand your emotions anymore and your self-esteem and self-confidence are battered as you attempt to work out who you are. Many slide into despair and depression becoming isolated and lonely.
The experience of dealing with a long-term loss of good health can be lonely and frightening. Everyone will have their own way of dealing with the impact this has on their life. While we come to terms with our changed circumstances, our employer, colleagues, family members and friends are also affected.
After the shock of suffering a life changing health condition, we need to take control of our lives. We need to build or rebuild confidence in our new selves and abilities. We help our participants by focusing on what they CAN do rather than what they can’t. We want to support individuals to spot opportunities and have the confidence to take them.
Achieving our aims
We plan to set up social enterprises where we utilise and develop the skills of employees, contractors and volunteers, many of whom will have suffered a late onset disability. We will take on interns and trainees to develop skills, which they can then take to the job market. Profits from the enterprises will be channelled back into further projects. .
As there is much to be done, we are looking to work with other organisations who also support those with late onset disability. We will look to connect our participants with other groups who can offer services which will help them become fully connected with their abilities look for ways to overcome obstacles and be fully engaged in what life has to offer. .
We are developing a course which will help guide participants to discover what opportunities they have with their current set of skills. We want our participants to believe in their potential in order to be able to actively seek out opportunities and grasp them. .

After 20 years in business, Alan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2011. Since then he has consulted for a number of Social Enterprises and Charities.
His experience with his illness has convinced him of the need for an organization who can help others in a similar position to look forward to a productive future.
